Instructor

Yahya Afenir was born to immigrant parents from the Philippines who migrated to San Diego in the late 1960's. Born and raised as a local Linda Vista native, his childhood roots often found him spending countless hours participating in activities at the Linda Vista Boys & Girls Club and Recreational Center. Like many kids growing up in Linda Vista, Yahya found himself exploring and playing in the surrounding Tecolote Canyons.

Yahya was educated at Chesterton Elementary, Montgomery Junior High and Kearny High School, graduating class of 1995. Yahya continued his studies at Mesa College earning his Associates degree in Business Administration before transferring to San Diego State University to receive his Bachelor's in Business Administration Accountancy by 2005.

In the same year of earning his Bachelor’s degree, Yahya pursued Jiu Jitsu under the tutelage of Professor Joao Ricardo Cunha at one of San Diego’s original Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools, Clube De Jiu Jitsu Pitbull, where he earned his brown belt. Yahya continued his training under the guidance of Professor Shawn Fowler and Professor Branden Guptill of Honu Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, where he received his black belt in the summer of 2016.

In the fall of 2017, Yahya pursued his dream to open and share this beautiful art to the community he grew up in and loves. He wants to give the community a positive outlet for everyone to enjoy. Yahya hopes 12.22. Jiu Jitsu will be the HEART of our Linda Vista community.
